WHERE IT ALL STARTED - 4 AM
Life goes through ups and downs, victories and defeats, John Wooden says, “Failure isn’t fatal, but failure to change might be.” Kenny Ellis is known as one of the youngest most successful NBA Trainers in the game.
Here is a story about a young man evolving to his situation and turning it into Success.
FAITH. EDUCATION. RELENTLESSNESS .
Success came early for Ellis as he was ranked nationally (#3) at the point guard position in Texas. Ellis led his team (Cypress Christian) to 3 straight State Championships but graduated with minimal scholarships. Unfortunately, no big colleges wanted to take the risk on a 5’5 106 lb. shifty point guard with a deadly jumper.
Ellis found himself enrolling at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO. While balancing school and the chip he now had on his shoulder, Ellis made a commitment to wake up every day at 4 AM for workouts and end his last workout at Midnight. He continued his 4 AM to Midnight ritual all the way through his college career where he ended at the University of Hartford.
After college there were decisions to be made on furthering his career professionally. Two opportunities were presented, with contracts in both Thailand and Dubai. With the quest for revenge almost complete, a torn meniscus and cartilage began a massive setback on his future career overseas.
After a successful surgery, Ellis began the process of getting back to 100% by rebuilding his game one day at a time. Ellis’s unorthodox training style brought him quite the following in local gyms. So much so, that he began to receive offers to train local kids in his community. After being a local trainer for 3 years in his home city of Houston, TX a new opportunity was presented to move to Los Angeles, CA to train for the summer. He began training some of LA’s elite grade school players, celebrity kids and NBA players.
Kenny has been quoted with saying "The thing I can take from everything that has happen is despite the adversity of one door closing, there is always another door that opens." Putting God first and the Will to succeed is what drives Ellis in his pursuit to impact as many lives as possible through the game of basketball.
